Music Ministry

God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises.

The St. Joseph Parish Music Ministry strives to offer an eclectic repertoire of music for Divine Worship representing the vast treasury of song from the past and present. First and foremost, all members of the parish and all visitors who worship with us are encouraged to actively participate in the liturgy as members of the assembly. For those who wish to further share their time and talent of music with the parish several special ministries are currently offered:

Parish Choir
This choir is open to all parishioners of high school age and older. The choir typically sings at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays except during the summer.  The choir also sings for special liturgies including Christmas Mass at Midnight and the Easter Vigil. Rehearsals are held Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. in the church.  All voices are welcome.  Some musical training is helpful, but the teaching of basic musicianship as well as time for prayer and fellowship are incorporated into the choir rehearsal.

Children’s Choir(s)
A strong children’s choir program is still in the formation stages.  Ideally, we would like to offer more than one choir (a beginner’s choir, more advanced choir etc.). The children’s choir will sing for 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays.  Rehearsal time is TBD.  Parents and other interested adults who would like to help in organizing the program are encouraged to contact the choir director.

Cantors
Cantors serve as the psalmist and fill the role of song leader at liturgies when no choir is present.  Adult cantors must audition and periodically rehearse with the director of music ministries.  Interested young cantors from our school and children’s choirs are encouraged to come forward and train for this important ministry.

Additional instrumentalists
Occasionally the parish hires professional musicians for special liturgies (like Christmas and Easter).  However, volunteer musicians of any age and skill level are always welcome to contribute their time and talent in various ways.  If you are interested in playing an instrument at Mass please contact the music director.

In addition to the above mentioned ensembles, there is always the potential to add new ensembles—vocal and instrumental.  If you are interested in forming a hand bell choir, funeral choir, or other such ensemble please let us know of your interest.

To join any of our music ensembles or to find out more information contact our director of music ministries, Jeff Wisniewski at jeff.wisniewski@stjosephmaumee.org or 419-893-4848, etc. 130.
